Cancer walk set June 26

Letters to the Editor

In the next few weeks Jay County newspaper subscribers will find 2010 WALK Against Cancer advertisements in their newspaper.

It is our hope that the community will join us on Saturday, June 26, at Jay County High School to raise money for the Jay County Cancer Society. The cancer society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.

Activities start with a survivor dinner at 5:30 p.m. (reservations required by June 12th), vendor area 7-9 p.m., children's carnival 7-9 p.m., opening ceremonies with balloon launch at 8:00 pm, and the luminary ceremony at 9:30 p.m. This year many donated items will be raffled off at 9:00 p.m.

The event will be held at the JCHS track rain or shine. We will not be moving the activities indoors in case of inclement weather, so bring a jacket, umbrella. Bring your lawn chairs too, as we will be sitting around the track on the grassy area this year also!

Flyers for the event are available at the Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital, Jay Community Center, and many local businesses.

The flyer is also available online at jaycountychamber.com.

The flyer will have the time for all events and a pledge sheet on the back. Any walker who collects more than $100 will receive a free WALK t-shirt while supplies last.

Thank you to our 2010 Gold Sponsors, Mayor Hosier's Golf Outing, Hartzell Fan, Jay County Hospital, Knights of Columbus, Remember When & The VanSkyock Family, Family Worship Center, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Altar Rosary Society, Stoneridge Electronics, MainSource Bank and Fellowhip Baptist Church.

How can you help?

There are many ways: Collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc. as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flyer in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless!

Remember that 100 percent of the money donated to the Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their un-insured cancer related expenses. In 2009 over 80 Jay County cancer patients were helped.

If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please contact us at 260-726-8110 and leave a message.

Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at PO Box 614, Portland, Indiana, 47371.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday evening June 26, as we remember those lost, honor those who are suffering and celebrate with those who have won the fight against cancer.

Thank you,

Bev Inman and

Linda Leonhard,
