Cards defeat FRHS
FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY — Elliot Westerbeck led the New Bremen Cardinals on the ground and through the air Friday night as they handed the Fort Recovery Indians a 35-20 defeat.
Westerbeck scored twice on the ground for New Bremen (1-3, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) and tossed a touchdown pass for the Cardinals, who led 28-7 at halftime en route to the win. He ran the ball 19 times for 136 yards — his scoring runs went for 36 yards in the first quarter and 4 in the second — and completed half of his 14 pass attempts for 73 yards.
After falling behind by two touchdowns in the first quarter — the second game on a 21-yard pass from Westerbeck to Alec Frideger — Shane Brunswick connected with Aaron Vagedes on a 57-yard TD pass less than two minutes into the second to pull the Tribe (2-2, 0-2 MAC) back into the game. But Westerbeck added his second TD run less than two minutes later, and Calib Cox added a 2-yard scoring run at the 3:28 mark of the second period to put New Bremen firmly in control.
The Cardinals went up 35-7 in the forth quarter before Brunswick completed TD passes to Kenny Wenning and Derek Gaerke in the final four minutes.
Brunswick, making his first start at quarterback, went 12-of-29 for 172 yards and the three TDs. Gaerke caught three passes for 27 yards, and Vagedes had two receptions for 73.
The Indians struggled to move the ball on the ground, netting just 13 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
