NEW BREMEN, Ohio - After hanging tough for more than a half, the Fort Recovery Indians couldn't hang on any longer.
And things certainly won't get easier next week.
The Indians, still searching for their second win of the season in their eighth game Friday, trailed New Bremen just 6-0 after two quarters but couldn't sustain the effort as the Cardinals pulled away for a 28-6 victory.
Fort Recovery, which drops to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in Midwest Athletic Conference action, could face its toughest test of the season Friday at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park as it hosts Coldwater. The Cavaliers entered play Friday with a perfect 7-0 record and held the distinction of being the No. 1-ranked Division IV team in the state.
Host New Bremen, which racked up 314 yards on the ground Friday - including 178 yards by running back Brennon Speckman on 22 carries - put some valuable insurance points on the board with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns after holding the slim half-time advantage.
The Indians, who drove deep into Cardinal territory on their first possession of the game before turning the ball over on downs, hurt themselves with turnovers Friday, as quarterback Toby Metzger threw three interceptions while completing 15-of-46 passes for 149 yards.
Fort running back Matt Tobe had a solid effort, rushing 19 times for 124 yards and his team's only touchdown on a 5-yard run with 44 seconds remaining in the game.
Speckman scored New Bremen's second-period touchdown on a 16-yard run. The Cardinals' Corey Jutte ran it in from 7 yards out at 9:47 of the third period for a 14-0 advantage after a two-point conversion, and Matt McCollum added a 1-yard scoring run later in the period.
Fort's Metzger completed passes to six different receivers in Friday's game, with Mike Trobridge and Tobe catching four each (Trobridge for 45 yards and Tobe for 33).[[In-content Ad]]
