MINSTER, Ohio - The Indians have turned the ball over a lot this year. But with their frenetic pace, they have generally forced more turnovers for the opposition.
Thursday night, Minster took care of the ball.
The host Wildcats gave the ball away just eight times while the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team committed 21 turnovers, including two in the final minute of a 38-36 defeat that halted a six-game winning streak.
The low-scoring game was tied at 13 at halftime, and Fort Recovery (10-3, 4-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) fell behind by seven at the close of the third quarter before rallying to take a 31-28 lead on a Holly Brunswick hoop midway through the fourth quarter. The Wildcats scored the next five points to take the lead before Nicole Pottkotter tied the score again with a couple of free throws with 1:42 on the clock.
Delanie Wolf's three-point play with just over a minute left gave the Wildcats (6-6, 2-2 MAC) the lead for good, and the Tribe turned the ball over on each of its next two possessions.
Maria Dahlinghaus and Wolf each split free throws in the final minute before Kendra Brunswick hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left to pull FRHS back to within two.
Pottkotter came up with a steal, but her last second attempt from long distance was no good.
Minster took 12 more field-goal tries than the Indians in the game and won despite shooting just 33 percent and getting beat 33-16 on the glass. Fort Recovery, which forces an average of 23 turnovers per game, went just 10-of-33 (30 percent) from the field.
