FORT RECOVERY - The Indians fouled and fouled, and scratched and clawed their way back into a game they trailed by 12 with just over three minutes to go. But the comeback and a fourth straight win over Coldwater and a sixth straight overall wasn't in the cards.

Fort Recovery High School's boys basketball team pulled all the way back to within three points only to have Joe Thomas and Adam Rammel go 4-for-4 from free-throw line in the final 10 seconds to seal a 71-66 victory for the Cavaliers.

Greg Kahlig racked up a season-high 33 points for the Indians, who had not lost since Dec. 19 against Parkway.

"When you're playing in the MAC, every game is a possession game," said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose team is 7-1 in non-league games but now 1-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. "It came down to the end when we had a couple plays where we missed a couple inside shots. If we hit those then it's a one- or two-point game and maybe then they feel more pressure ...

"The last few years every game has been down to the last possession. Tonight was no different."

Fort Recovery had won three straight over the Cavaliers (6-3, 2-1 MAC), each decided by five points or fewer, including a 48-43 victory Dec. 27 as part of the Coldwater Classic.

The Indians trailed by a single point after Craig Tobe's 3-pointer to open the final period, but then their offense went cold. They failed to score for about four minutes while Coldwater's Eric Lefeld tallied six points as part of an 11-0 run.

The 12-point deficit had the Tribe fouling with about three minutes remaining, and it was able to rally as the Cavaliers missed 10-of-21 free throws over a two-minute span. Fort Recovery closed to within 62-57 when Lefeld fouled out with 1:18 remaining, but a miss underneath and a couple of turnovers slowed down the comeback effort.

Twice in the final 10 seconds the Indians pulled to within two, first on two free throws by Tobe with eight seconds left, and again when Greg Kahlig hit a hoop with just 1.1 seconds to go. But Coldwater hit its final four free throws to survive.

"We made the plays we had to down the stretch to win it," said Cavaliers coach Mike Kanney.

Coldwater was up by six points twice in the opening period, but the lead changed hands four times in the second quarter. The visitors took a three-point advantage into the half thanks to a late 3-pointer by Joe Thomas, but couldn't extend their lead by more than five points in the third.

While Kahlig powered the Indians, the Cavaliers were led by a two-pronged attack.

Thomas did the job from the outside, burying four 3-pointers on the way to a 20-point evening. Lefeld, when he wasn't in foul trouble, owned the paint offensively to the tune of 9-of-13 from the field for 20 points.

"He's been struggling to score, so it was nice to see him score tonight," said Kanney of Lefeld. "We were able to get the ball in the post to him. He's a lot smarter about not putting it on the ground, and when he was covered he kicked it back out and we got some good inside-outside stuff going."

Lefeld also grabbed five rebounds for Coldwater, which won despite being out-rebounded 30-20.

Kahlig, who is now averaging nearly 25 points per game, was outstanding regardless of how far he shot the ball from. He made 67 percent of his shots inside the arc, buried 4-of-7 (57 percent) from 3-point range - one of the misses came on an attempt from beyond half-court - and hit 5-of-6 free throws.

The junior also finished with a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds. He added three assists and two blocked shots.

"Kahlig's a great player," said Kanney. "He does a lot of nice things for them.

"As a whole I thought our kids gave great effort. We did as good a job as we could at guarding him."

Craig Tobe added 15 points for the Indians. Frank Thien dished out 10 assists, and Toby Metzger grabbed eight rebounds.

The Indians struggled from the field in the first half as they fell 54-41 to Coldwater.

Fort Recovery managed just two points in the first quarter, and shot only 28 percent in the first half. It hit 36 percent for the game compared to 59 percent for the Cavaliers, who were 10-of-14 (71 percent) after the intermission.

Chad Westgerdes led Coldwater with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Jordan Woeste and Ross Wermert each had eight points and four rebounds, and Brad Gilliland also scored eight points.

Cody Fiely hit 5-of-6 from the field to lead the Indians with 12 points, but the rest of the team went just 8-of-30 (27 percent). Shane Brunswick also reached double figures with 10 points.
