Celebrate giving during foundation week (11/14/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

George Bush Sr. proclaimed Nov. 12-18 National Community Foundation Week in 1989. Since then the now more than 700 community foundations nationwide celebrate community giving during that week to bring awareness of how community foundations assist donors and help communities thrive.

The concept of a community foundation is still sometimes hard to grasp, but we have grown so much and have done so much good for the community that we are glad to have this chance to to bring awareness to our work. Community Foundation Week is the time we recognize and pay tribute to the contributions that the community foundation and our many donors have made to our community.

The Portland Foundation has awarded more than $8 million in grants and scholarships to the Jay County community since 1951. Recent foundation activities include the creation of Freedom Park, a $100,000 grant to John Jay Center for Learning's capital campaign to renovate the Weiler Building, scholarships awarded to 85 students to assist them in achieving their higher education goals, and grants awarded by the foundation's Women's Giving Circle for women's health issues.

Chapters of the Association of Fundraising Professionals also celebrate National Philanthropy Day on November 15. National Philanthropy Day has become a major event in cities and towns across the country, drawing hundreds and even thousands to celebrate the commitment of those who make a difference in their communities.

Charitable giving touches all of our lives on a daily basis. Whether it's a volunteer helping take care of our children or grandparents; a person writing a check to support a local not-for-profit; a teenager planting trees in a park; or a musician sharing his or her talents in a summer night concert, we all experience how giving helps a community thrive. These efforts should be acknowledged, applauded and encouraged in order to continue building a better community for our future.

It is also important for Hoosiers to know that there are several ways Indiana is a national and global leader in philanthropy. Indiana boasts numerous world-renowned institutions and resources, including Lilly Endowment Inc., Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, Lumina Foundation for Education, more than 90 community foundations statewide, and the first Youth As Resources United Way program, just to name a few.

While many individual organizations will honor their own in their community, the week will be a statewide celebration that recognizes individuals, foundations and corporations for their commitment to philanthropy.

The Portland foundation is a not-for-profit public charity established in 1951 to serve donors, award grants and provide leadership to improve Jay County forever.
