Celebration of Lights is Nov. 14 (11/06/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Nov. 14 is the date set for the 14th annual Celebration of Lights ceremony sponsored by the Jay County Hospital Auxiliary.

The auxiliary sponsors this event to support the Lifeline program, an emergency response system that provides help 24 hours a day. Lifeline is available to Jay County residents and residents of surrounding counties if there is no emergency response center. The elderly or handicapped are able to stay in their own homes knowing that emergency help is available at the push of a button.

Each year as the Lifeline program continues to grow, new Lifeline units must be purchased, and old ones replaced, at a cost of $275 per unit. Because of your generous donations we have been able to keep the fee for this service at just $15 a month since the program began.

Lighting a light is a way to honor a friend, to remember an anniversary or birthday, or as a memorial for a loved one. Lights may be purchased for a donation of $5 per name or couple. A strand of lights may be purchased for $100, or a whole tree for $300. Names of the honorees will be displayed on scrolls in the lobby of the hospital throughout the holidays.

Come join us in Conference rooms A and B of the hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

The Friendship Company and Brass Image will entertain you before we go outside to watch the lights being turned on.

Afterwards you are invited back inside to enjoy punch and cookies and listen to holiday music sung by The Performance Company.

You still have time to make a donation. Forms are available at the hospital, banks and most businesses in Jay County.

Mark your calendar for Nov. 14. It's a great way to spend the evening and a great way to start the holiday season.

Great celebration

To the editor:

On Oct. 13, Arts Place celebrated 40 seasons of "nurturing the creative spirit in all of us," at its annual meeting and gala. Arts Place today is the gold standard and serves as the blueprint for other community art centers to follow. It was born of a dream and has been nurtured as a labor of love by its faithful and dedicated director and staff, as well as its countless volunteers who lend their time, expertise and resources.

Many people contributed to the success of the event. Among those were: Eric Rogers and the loyal staff; Sid Austin and committee (Donna Haggenjos, Dolphus Stephens, Mavis Catalfio, Glen Priest, Connie Ronald and Sara Franks-Farris) for providing the trip down memory lane; Jack Ronald for his editorial praising Arts Place's accomplishments; the entertainment, which included former Portland resident Larry Harris and Friends, Hypnotic Hips, Souled out Band, Arts Place musicians, Zack Medler and Steve McClung.

Also appreciated were J and J Vending, Elaine Broering, Rob Weaver, Peter Minnich, Can Bilbrey, Pete Vogler, Ilze Koch, Connie Roberts, Betsi Skiver, Arts Place Board of Directors, and the many sponsors, without whom the event would not have been possible.

Last but not least, thanks to all of you who joined us, making this the most well-attended annual meeting ever.

The annual meeting committee - Becky Hinkle, chair; Sara Franks-Farris, Dagmar Oliver and Sid Austin

Angel Tree

To the editor:

The weather is starting to get cooler, and along with the chill come thoughts of the Holidays. It won't be long until the Christmas decorations go up and the snow starts falling. Thus the reason for this letter.

We are calling on the community again this year to help with the Angel Tree Project. Last year along with your help over 650 kids received a little nicer Christmas. Plus we gave out over 65 food boxes for the elderly in our community. This would not be possible without the help of all of you.

Our applications went into the elementary schools around October 1st. as of now we have over 500 angels to put on our tree for adoption. We also had applications for pick - up at the C.F.S. on Wayne Street in Portland and the Wayne township trustee's office on Main Street also in Portland. Plus the Portland Chamber had them available for anyone to pick-up. Our deadline date was Oct. 26th.

Remember the saying "It takes a village to raise a child?"

Well it takes a giving community like Jay County to make this project not only to continue BUT ALSO to grow like is has over the years.

Now comes the part you are waiting for "if" you can help this year we would greatly appreciate it. There are many ways you can do so, you can adopt an Angel off of our Angel Tree that is in the customer service area at Wal-Mart, adopt a family (go to Wayne township trustee office) or you can make a monetary donation by sending a check to the ANGEL TREE PROJECT P.O. Box 515, Portland Indiana 47371.

I am sure you have some questions, so please feel free to call me, Kay Strausburg at 726-2148 or Cathy Smith at 726-8268 or Denise Brewster at 726-4670.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope we will be hearing from you soon.

In The Sprit of Giving,

Kay Strausburg
