Celebration set Nov. 12 (10/31/2008)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Jay County Hospital Auxiliary volunteers will be sponsoring the Celebration of Lights ceremony at Jay County Hospital. This will be the 15th year for this event.
The auxiliary provides LifeLine, an emergency response system that provides help 24-hours a day to those who are in need. Without the help of the community's generous donations to the Celebration of Lights, we would not be able to continue this great service to residents of Jay and surrounding counties (if they do not have an emergency center). The only requirement for the service is that the resident must have a local physician. With LifeLine, the elderly and/or handicapped are able to stay in their own homes knowing that help is available when they push their help button.
Lights may be placed on tress for a donation of $5 per name or couple; a strand of lights for $100; or a whole tree for $300. Purchasing a light is a great way to honor a friend, remember an anniversary or birthday, or as a memorial for a loved one.
The fee for LifeLine is just $15 a month. Such a small amount to pay for knowing that you, or a loved one, will receive help at the push of the LifeLine button. Each year we have to replace LifeLine units at a cost of $745 each. We hope that with your donation given for the ceremony, we will be able to keep our fee the same for another year.
Forms to make a donation for the Celebration of Lights are available at Jay County Hospital, Jay County banks and most area businesses.
Please join us at the hospital on Nov. 12. There will be entertainment, lighting of decorations, and refreshments. You will also be able to see some of the results of the remodeling that is underway. It is beautiful.
See you on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

To the editor:
For the past 50 years, Jay-Randolph Developmental Services Inc. (JRDS) has worked to "Live United," and we endorse this concept, since it supports the notion of Jay County residents and the many United Way agencies working together in a collaborative and mutually beneficial manner.
Almost from the beginning of United Way, your local donations have supported JRDS services for local residents with special needs. Your contributions have enabled United Way of Jay County to financially support JRDS with specific expenses related to operations, transporation for community-based services and, most recently, automatic door openers for a client entrance to the Portland center.
JRDS is dedicated to empowering "persons with special needs to pursue their individual goals in a variety of settings." We know the other United Way member agencies are as committed and passionate in fulfilling their respective missions. To do this effectively, however, we need your continued encouragement and support.
One way to help is to contribute to the United Way at a dollar level that is meaningful to you. By doing this, you are helping hundreds of local residents continue to receive quality-enhancing and life-changing services and support right here in Jay County.
Thanks for giving the United Way.

The Jay County High School Key Club would like to thank everyone who gave money at the Homecoming Parade this year. With your help, we were able to raise almost $400 for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Thank you for your generosity and your willingness to help "Light up a Child's Life!"
