CELINA, Ohio - The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team lost for just the fourth time this season Tuesday as Celina's Kelsey Waterman scored her team's last seven points to hand the Indians a 62-61 defeat.
Waterman's hoop with 35 seconds left gave her Bulldogs a one-point lead, but Fort Recovery's Kendra Brunswick reclaimed a 61-60 lead for the Tribe 11 seconds later. However, Brunswick fouled Waterman on the next possession.
Hitting her 11th and 12th free throws of the game, Waterman put Celina back on top by one. The Indians had a final opportunity, but Kinsey Wenning's shot with three seconds left was off the mark.
Waterman carried Celina with her 12-of-13 effort from the free-throw line on the way to 21 points and four rebounds. Cenzie Yoder (16 points) added an 8-for-8 foul-shooting mark as the Bulldogs outscored Fort Recovery 23-9 from the line.
Gina Everman added 12 points and five rebounds.
Joanna Snyder shot 67 percent (8-of-12) from the field as she led the Indians by matching Waterman with 21 points. She made all of her three 3-point attempts and had three steals.
Chelsea Leuthold added 10 points and six rebounds for the Tribe (15-4), and Wenning scored nine points.
Fort Recovery closes the regular season at home Thursday against St. John's. It would lock up at least a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title with a win over the Division IV No. 5 Blue Jays. (16-3).
The Indians, St. John's and New Bremen are currently all 7-1 in the MAC.
Junior varsity
Holly Brunswick made all of her field-goal attempts as Fort Recovery stayed undefeated with a 59-32 win over the Bulldogs.
Brunswick shot 6-of-6 from the field to finished with 13 points. Kelly Nietfeld added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Christen Wendel grabbed 10 boards.
