FORT RECOVERY - They were right there knocking on the door most of the time. But the Indians couldn't break through.
Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team trailed the entire game Tuesday, falling 45-39 to the Celina Bulldogs.
Liz Homan, who scored a team-high 15 points for Celina, hit the opening bucket of the game at the 7:22 mark of the opening quarter and her team never gave up the advantage. The Bulldogs never led by more than eight points, but stayed in control and held off the Indians in the final minute.
A pair of Joanna Snyder free throws had Fort Recovery (13-6) within a single possession with 58 seconds left. Emily May came up with a steal on the ensuing possession, but the Indians failed to cash in.
Cayla Hellwarth extended the Celina lead to five points with two free throws at the 18-second mark, and Cenzie Yoder split two foul shots with nine seconds left for the final margin. Fort Recovery missed 3-point attempts on each of its final two possessions.
Homan shot 5-of-6 from the field as Celina hit 55 percent in the second half, and added four steals to lead the Bulldogs. Kelsey Waterman added eight points and five rebounds, and Gina Everman also scored eight points.
Cenzie Yoder had seven points, five rebounds and four steals, and Cayla Hellwarth dished out three assists.
Snyder had game highs of 16 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Indians, who managed just 5-of-18 (28 percent) shooting in the second half). Kendra Brunswick added five points and four rebounds.
Junior varsity
Abby Huelskamp was nearly perfect in leading Fort Recovery to a 39-24 victory over the Bulldogs.
Huelskamp missed just one shot all night, going 4-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line to score a game-high 12 points. She also had four rebounds and six steals for the Indians, who led by just three before outscoring Celina 14-2 in the final period.
Kendra Brunswick followed Huelskamp with six points and six rebounds, Olivia Thien also grabbed six boards and Alyssa Brackman dished out four assists.
Amanda Hoying scored eight points for Celina, which shot just 5-of-22 (23 percent) in the second half.
Sydney Schroeder added seven points, and Jodie Klosterman had five rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
