FORT RECOVERY — The season opener was perfect, just not for the Indians.
Celina ace Mike Siefker tossed a perfect game Monday against Fort Recovery’s young squad, leading his Bulldogs to a 12-0, five-inning win.
“I was pleased with the effort that we gave and I was pleased with our enthusiasm and our energy level,” said first-year FRHS coach Jerry Kaup. “Celina made the plays. They hit the ball. … We just lost to a better ball club tonight.”
Celina’s Kahl Knapke worked a walk to lead off the game, Braden Billger was hit by a pitch and then the team’s No. 3 and 4 hitters made the Indians pay. Kyle Markle drove in two runs with a double to center field, and Derek Waterman smashed a two-run home run down the left-field line.
The 4-0 lead was more than enough for Siefker, who struck out every Fort Recovery batter the first time through the order and finished with 12 strikeouts.
“We were nervous starting out,” said Kaup, who started three freshmen and has no seniors on his roster. “(Siefker) is a nice pitcher. The first time through, we couldn’t touch the ball.”
Knapke finished 3-for-3 with a triple, four RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases for Celina, which tacked on six runs in the third inning. Markle added two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.
“Knapke and Markle were our leading hitters last year,” said Celina Coach Drew Braun. “Both hit over .400. We expect a lot out of those two gentlemen.”
The bright spot for the Indians came from Kent Retz. The freshman entered the game to pitch the fifth inning and sat down the Bulldogs — Markle, Waterman and pinch-hitter Nick Legg — in order.
“He did a nice job coming in to throw strikes and not give up any runs,” said Kaup. “It makes me feel good, and I think it makes him feel good.”
Shane Pottkotter took the loss, giving up 12 runs — nine earned — on 13 hits and two walks in four innings.
