Cells for jail coming soon

Jay County Building Corporation

Expect to see cells being installed in the Jay County Jail by the end of the month.

"We're going to roll in the cells in probably about two weeks," said Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz during this morning's Jay County Building Corporation meeting. "By that time we should have the roof on."

Badders updated the board on jail progress, saying the construction is on schedule, maybe even a bit ahead of schedule.

Crews are currently working on the roof of the building and Badders said a lot of interior concrete work is wrapped up.

"We're pretty much done pouring all the floors inside," he said.

The cells, which have been built and are waiting in storage at the production facility outside Atlanta, will be transported here and installed in the jail.

They will be rolled in through open spots in the exterior walls, which will then be closed once all the cells are inside the building.

Jay County Council members will tour the expansion prior to their meeting on Wednesday.

In other business, Badders presented board members with three change orders.

The first is an $88,492 deduct for removal of a video visitation system. The savings are somewhat misleading, however, since a different visitation will be installed by an outside firm later in the construction.

This system was originally bid with the jail project and will be removed from the general contractor's total.

Badders also presented the board with two additions totaling $33,274.

Construction crews will need to erect a firewall between the new and old portions of the jail to meet fire codes, costing approximately $20,000, as well as build walkways around any equipment that will be located on the roof to meet building code, costing about $13,000.

Also this morning, board member Todd Wickey suggested the board change its meeting times since the 7:30 a.m. start is inconvenient for him to make meetings.

Board members agreed to change the regularly scheduled monthly meetings to the fourth Thursday of every month at noon in the commissioners' room of the courthouse.[[In-content Ad]]
