CFO raising concerns (01/28/08)

A proposed 500-hog confined feeding operation has raised concerns with nearby property owners because its potential impact on the nearby Loblolly marsh.
Jerry Bruns, who lives on county road 50 west in the northwest corner of Bearcreek Township, told the Jay County Drainage Board this morning that a hog operation proposed by Joseph E.M. Schwartz near the Jay-Adams county line is close to the flood plain and construction could affect surface water drainage in the area.
"I know the Friends of the Limberlost are concerned about it, and I know the state of Indiana is concerned about it," Bruns said, adding that Indiana Department of Natural Resources officials were discussing the matter today.
Commissioners asked county surveyor Brad Daniels to check on the situation before a building permit is issued.
In other business this morning, commissioners:
•Approved purchase of an electronic surveillance system for the Jay County Courthouse Annex in an effort to prevent vandalism. Two outdoor security cameras and a lobby camera will be installed by Priority 1 Life Safety Systems, Fort Wayne, at a cost of $2,775.
•Were reminded of the upcoming Jay County Soil and Water Conservation dinner and annual meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the 4-H Building at the Jay County Fairgrounds. Ron Turco, a Purdue University agronomy professor and director of the Indiana Water Resources Research Center, will speak on the economics and practicality of methane digesters. To make reservations for the dinner, phone 260-726-4373, extension 3.
•Heard a presentation on computer maintenance service contracts from Tom Alter of The AME Group, Vincennes.
