BOW approves more funds for work

Portland Board of Works members approved a change order and allocated additional funds Thursday for extra expenses incurred in the current remodeling project at Portland City Hall.

Board members Bob McCreery, Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier and Councilwoman Linda Kennedy accepted a $4,980 change order submitted by Minnich Architecture and Construction, Portland. They also voted to allocate an additional $8,006 to the project.

This extra amount brings the total allotted for the project to $35,000, city clerk-treasurer Barbara Blackford said Thursday. The board does not expect that all of these funds will be used for the renovation work.

The additional funds were needed to “bring the electric up to code,” utilize a window discovered in the office wall during demolition and raise the ceiling in her office, Blackford said.

The project is being funded by $20,000 encumbered from the Portland City Council’s 2003 budget. The additional funds are coming from the council’s 2004 budget and the city’s water and sewer office budget.

A quote of $22,014 was originally accepted for the remodeling work on several city offices on the first floor of Portland City Hall.

In other business, board members signed a contractor agreement with Jutte Excavating of Fort Recovery for the project in the Steen Addition, located between Floral Avenue and the city limits west of Boundary Pike. At the board’s Feb. 13 meeting, board members accepted the $93,093 bid from Jutte Excavating for a drainage improvement project.

These improvements are part of the planned Boundary Pike/Wayne Street project. Streets affected by the renovation will be paved, and sidewalks will be added. This project also will eliminate two of the city’s 17 combined sewer overflows, provide better drainage for those areas affected and create new infrastructure including gas, sewer and water lines.

Also Thursday, board members:

•Accepted a $7,800 quote from Applied Metals and Machine Works of Fort Wayne to recondition one of the city’s two backwash pumps at the wastewater treatment plant.

The pump being cleaned, painted and rebuilt has not been removed from service since 1980.

•Approved a request by Waste Management for the company to change the city’s recycling collection schedule to three days a week instead of the current five-day schedule. The request was approved on a 90-day trial basis starting April 1.

A Waste Management representative at a previous city council meeting explained collection days will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday’s current route will be collected on Monday with Monday’s route, and Thursday’s present route will be collected Wednesday with Wednesday’s route. Friday’s route will not change.

There will be no fee change, and Waste Management will notify customers of the change.

•Approved a request by Arch Bridge Kroozers to close East Main Street from Meridian to Harrison streets and Ship Street from Main to Water streets during the cruise-in on Saturday, May 22 in downtown Portland. These streets will be closed from approximately 1 to 9 p.m.

The group already had approval for the cruise-in to be held on West Main Street, between Meridian and Ship streets; Court Street, between Main and Walnut streets; and Commerce Street from the City Cigar Store to Walnut Street.[[In-content Ad]]
