City plans are reviewed
Portland Board of Works
The storm and sanitary sewers at the north end of Portland will eventually be separated.
Officials with The Schneider Corporation recently created a plan for separation of the sewers. This plan includes a timeline for the project, cost estimates and preliminary design work. The plan was reviewed by members of the Portland Board of Works this morning.
After the meeting, Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, said the separation project would be north of Votaw Street.
Nola Albrecht, landscape architect with Schneider, told board members that it is important to get the storm and sanitary sewer project moving to accommodate the planned Katelynn Place apartments near Lafayette Street.
As part of accepting the plans, the board members also voted to pay Schneider $38,500 for creating the plans.

Schneider officials also created a long-term plan for the wastewater treatment plant and asked for permission to complete a survey for phase III of the Hudson Family Park project in preparation for a proposed sledding hill.
The study for the wastewater treatment plant determined what improvements need to be made at the plant in the next 10 years, and came up with cost estimates. Schneider officials determined that the most expensive of the 12 items that need to be addressed is the replacement of filter valves and electric actuators, which is expected to cost $460,000. This replacement needs to be made within 10 years, according to the study.
Board members voted to accept the results from the wastewater study and pay Schneider $5,000 for the work.
Also today, Schneider asked for permission to complete a boundary survey at Hudson Family Park.
Albrecht said officials with the engineering work need to know exactly where the west and south property lines are located. She said dirt being removed in the excavation of the pond will be used to create a sledding hill, and the contractors need to know where they can put the dirt.
The board voted to allow the park survey at a cost of $5,950.[[In-content Ad]]
