City ready to extend water line for hotel (01/19/07)
Portland Board of Works

The city of Portland is prepared to extend water service to a site on West Votaw Street if a Holiday Inn Express is developed there.
Approval was given Thursday afternoon by the Portland Board of Works to bore under Ind. 67 and run an 8-inch water line to a piece of property now owned by Eugene and Jane Gillum to serve the proposed hotel.
The project, with a maximum price-tag of $17,720, will also include a fire hydrant on the property.
Developer Scott Daniels said this morning his group of investors is "looking at" the property but has not acquired it.
"We are exploring the opportunity," Daniels said.
Earlier plans had called for the hotel to be constructed at the north edge of Portland on U.S. 27, but the city balked at the cost of running utilities to the site.
Running water lines to the Ind. 67 site would require approval from the Indiana Department of Transportation. Work on the boring project will be done by Fleming Excavating, Decatur, if it goes forward.
The board of works also agreed Thursday to go forward with replacing a sewer line in South Alley, east of the Weiler Building.
The current sewer line, one of the oldest in the city, has five taps from the Weiler Building.
When stormwater is high, it backfeeds into the building.
The old clay tile line is broken in several places as is a brick manhole in the alley.
R. Davis and Sons, Portland, was hired to do the work at a cost of $27,103.23. Davis submitted the low quote for the job.
In other business, the board of works accepted a change order on phase one of work at Hudson Family Park, reducing the cost by $2,500, and approved a water bill adjustment for Jesse Bentz, 711 E. Race St., in accordance with city ordinance.[[In-content Ad]]
