Jay Schools on 2 hour delay for Friday

Road conditions will likely improve today as winds have died down and plows can make up ground against overnight drifting.

Jay Schools, while hopeful that students could return to classes Friday, declared a two-hour delay for Friday by 10 a.m. today.

"They should make pretty good headway today," said county engineer Dan Watson. "I anticipate everything being open or widened by the end of the day."

County plow crews were pestered by high winds the last two days, which created an uphill battle against drifting snow. Today, however, those winds have ceased.

Watson said a little bit of sun today could help melt some tougher snow and ice, but gloomy gray skies are likely to hang over the area.

If the highway department makes ground against the snow, Watson said he thinks conditions may be favorable enough for Jay Schools, which cancelled classes again today, to go on Friday.

School administrators called off classes for today around 4 p.m. Wednesday. With today's cancellation, that brings the total number of days cancelled this year to eight, taking the projected final day of classes to June 9.

"We're hopeful," said superintendent Tim Long of the chances that school will be open Friday. "I think (plow crews) are making great progress from what I've seen, but it's slick out there."

The two-hour delay Friday will give plows a little leeway in the morning to do some last-minute touch-ups to roads and allow school administrators to make a final call. Long said there is a possibility that the delay could turn into a cancellation after reviewing conditions in the county tomorrow morning.

Long said if classes are cancelled, then evening activities, including the girls basketball sectional being hosted at Jay County High School, will be called off.

Despite the weather, drivers have handled the conditions well, at least according to the number of accidents, slide-offs and stuck vehicles.

"It's been quiet," said Sheriff Ray Newton. "Tuesday night it was really quiet.

"I didn't think we got the snow and the wind like they were predicting," he said. "The county highway did a pretty good job."

Even though road conditions are expected to improve, Newton still advised drivers to take their time.

"I think if everyone drive with caution, we'll be OK," he said.[[In-content Ad]]
