Clear the streets for city parades
Letters to the editor
If the city of Fort Wayne has the ability to clear the streets of vehicles for the Three-Rivers Festival Parade, I do believe there is a way that Portland can do it also.
I attended the Fourth of July parade in Portland and have no interest in attending another one.
Vehicles were parked along the parade route, so lawn chairs had to be put between or behind the vehicles.
To make it worse, where we were sitting, two cars were running so that the people could enjoy the air conditioning.
The exhaust fumes were not only inhaled by me, but also by my grandchildren.
I will not encourage my family to “enjoy” any further parades in Portland.
By the way, if the vehicles are removed from the road, the parade watchers will be able to sit at least six feet further back from the floats and entries in the parade.
This will increase the safety of the children waiting to go after candy.
Respectfully yours,

Lots of help
To the editor:
We were out at the V.M.B.C. motor bike club at the fairgrounds.
We stopped at the Optimist stand to get a sandwich and ice cream, and our golf cart stopped and wouldn’t start.
Two of the Optimist Club men tried to see if they could help start it, but it just wouldn’t go.
Two very nice people — Mr. and Mrs. Lemoine Overholser — took us to NAPA auto parts to get a new battery for the golf cart and took us back to the fairgrounds.
When we got there, David DeHoff installed the battery into the golf cart, which worked just fine.
We wish to thank everyone that helped us get what we needed.
Thank you and God bless you all.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Stevens
