Clubs team to help kids
Letter to the Editor
To the editor:
On Saturday, the Portland Lions and Portland Kiwanis clubs will host the Hot Cakes for Cold Kids pancake breakfast.
Together, the two clubs will use the proceeds of this joint project to purchase coats, hats and gloves for young people in the community so they will have properly-fitting winter wear and will not have to be cold.
Last year, the clubs gave away between 250 and 300 coats. Also, more than 500 pairs of gloves and hats were given to Jay School Corporation to be distributed to students who need them.
The pancake and sausage breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Portland Lions Club Civic Center, 307 E. 100 North. The clubs will also accept donations of gently-used coats at the event.
The coat giveaway will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Portland Lions Civic Center.
This very worthwhile project could only be successful with the assistance of the community. We hope everyone in Portland attends our pancake and sausage breakfast so none of our kids will have to go cold this winter.
Thank you very much in advance for your participation in helping make our community an even better place in which to live.
