ST. HENRY, Ohio - Despite hitting less than a quarter of their shots through the first two quarters, the Fort Recovery Indians were right in the game.
Continued cold shooting in the second half took them right out of it.
The host St. Henry Redskins, riding big nights from Spencer Niekamp (20 points) and Vic Fortkamp (15), pulled away in the second half for a 61-48 Midwest Athletic Conference victory Friday over Fort Recovery.
Division III No. 7 St. Henry, which improves to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in MAC play, built just a five-point halftime advantage despite limiting Fort to 23 percent from the floor in the first half.
The Indians, who were led by junior Greg Kahlig's 23 points, saw their deficit grow to 36-28 after three quarters. Kahlig's total Friday leaves him 27 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
St. Henry, which was 21-of-45 from the floor (47 percent) in Friday's game, was just 3-for-17 from 3-point range, but made 16-of-20 free throws.
Fort Recovery, which will host Ansonia Tuesday in a make-up game (6 p.m. tip-off), was 14-for-52 (27 percent) overall and 6-for-21 (29 percent) from behind the 3-point line in Friday's game. The Indians were 14-for-21 from the free throw line.
Toby Metzger scored nine points, Frank Thien added eight and Craig Tobe six for the Indians.
Fort Recovery won Friday night's junior varsity game by a 42-34 margin.
