JCHS football

The Patriots had their best season on the field in six years. And on Friday, one of their players was selected as one of the elite academic performers in the state.
The Indianapolis Colts named Jay County High School senior defensive lineman Collin Saxman to their 2013 Academic All-State Football Team.
“I was very surprised when I found out about it,” said Saxman, who didn’t know JCHS coach Tim Millspaugh had nominated him until learning Friday morning he had won the award. “I had no idea. It was a shock. … It came as a complete surprise.”
The Colts will honor Saxman and the other 29 players selected for the award on Dec. 1. There will be a recognition ceremony that morning, and the academic standouts will be introduced at Lucas Oil Stadium during halftime of the game between Indianapolis and the Tennessee Titans.
Saxman helped the Patriots to a 7-4 record this season, with six of those victories coming at home. He carries a 4.06 grade point average and is tied for No. 1 in the Jay County senior class.
In order to be nominated for the award, an athlete must play in 70 percent of the team’s games, be in the top 5 percent of the class and carry a GPA of 3.6 or higher.
“It’s exciting,” said Millspaugh. “One of the goals we talk about as a team is to succeed in the classroom. …
“It’s awesome. I’m very proud of him.”
Two other past Jay County players — Joseph Vormohr in 2005 and Billy Wellman in ’08 — have also earned the award.
Other honorees this year included defensive backs Joshua Steveler of Bluffton and Chandler Carroll of Yorktown.[[In-content Ad]]
