Come out and see 'Assassins'

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:
As a former resident of Jay County and a frequent return visitor, I would like to take this opportunity to address the readers of the Commercial Review about a delightfully crazy show currently being presented at Arts Place called ASSASSINS.
This is a musical revue based around the nine individuals who killed or tried to kill Presidents of the United States. Some I am sure you have heard of, such as John Wilkes Booth, the deranged actor and murderer of President Lincoln. Most of the others though, will be as unfamiliar to you as they were to me. Does anyone remember Charles Guiteau? If you see ASSASSINS you will learn that he was the megalomaniac who killed President Garfield in 1881.
I understand this show is not your typical “Sound of Music” fare. No one is dancing around singing, “I just met a girl named Maria”!  It features strong language and adult themes of anger and betrayal; I would equate it to an R-rated movie. It also features some gun violence and loud blanks going off indiscriminately. So it is definitely not for everyone.
However if you give it your time, ASSASSINS will for sure give you something to think about. After the show this past weekend my friends and I talked about history, crime, politics, political causes, the meaning of art, and, yes, crazy people. It is basically the poster-child for “thought provoking.”
The show will continue this weekend with shows on Thursday through Saturday at 7 pm and a Sunday matinee at 2 pm. I know there are a lot of commitments on people’s time around Halloween, and live theatre is sometimes considered a luxury item to be cut when times are hard. I urge you to help keep live theatre in Jay County by supporting Jay County Civic Theatre’s production of ASSASSINS. And I guarantee that if you go see ASSASSINS this weekend you will have something to talk about on Monday morning.
Sincerely,
Russell Burbage

A choice
To the editor:
This year, voters are demanding a referendum on politics as usual.
How are the parties responding?
Study their secretary of state candidates. In Indiana, voters do not select secretary of state in primaries; the parties do this at state conventions. Parties cannot blame stupid voters or party-crossers for candidates.
Sometimes, parties choose well, as when Republicans nominated outgoing secretary of state Todd Rokita.
This year — when parties should grovel to voters — they’ve shown utter disdain.
Secretary of state enforces election laws, yet only one candidate for that office followed these election laws: Libertarian Mike Wherry.
Republican Charlie White faces an investigation for failing to resign from Fishers Town Council when he moved outside of his district. White expects voters to believe that he was living in his ex-wife’s house while waiting to move in with his new wife.
Democrat Vop Osili filed sloppy campaign-finance paperwork, leaving required fields blank: No names on some donations over $100, no occupations on some $1,000 and up. Osili cannot argue that once in office, he’d delegate nitpicky tasks to staff.
Mike Wherry shows what Libertarians think of you. As a Naval officer, Wherry has proven integrity. His experience as patent attorney, engineer and businessman relates well to the office’s business-services division.
Remember, Libertarians need 2 percent of secretary of state votes to stay on Hoosier ballots.
If Libertarians fall short, you’ll be stuck with whomever Republicans and Democrats think you deserve.
