Comer nets 29 for St. Francis
Collegiate Check-up
Kegan Comer started Tuesday’s game on the bench. He finished having made more free throws than the entire opposing squad.
Comer, a 2013 Jay County High School graduate, came off the bench to light it up from the free-throw line as he led the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team in scoring with 29 points in an 88-77 victory over Siena Heights.
The freshman buried 15 of his 16 free-throw attempts and shot 7-of-12 from the field. He also had four rebounds and one steal for the Cougars (5-2).
Comer also had 12 points, four rebounds and four assists Saturday in a 64-53 victory over Cardinal Stritch.
Brock McFarland
Jay County – 2013
Came up just short of a double-double Saturday in the NAIA No. 16 Grace College men’s basketball team’s 91-67 win over Akron-Wayne.
McFarland was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field as he finished with 10 points to go along with nine rebounds. He also dished out five assists and came up with two steals.
He had 10 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal Tuesday in a 107-94 win for the Lancers over IU East, and finished with eight points, six assists, three steals and one rebound Friday as Grace (4-0) topped Wilberforce 110-82.
Wade Gelhaus
Fort Recovery – 2013
Opened his collegiate career by helping the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team to a 2-0 start.
Gelhaus saw his first minutes Friday and finished with seven points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block in the Cardinals’ 92-50 win over Olivet. He totaled eight points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal Monday in a 76-44 victory over Alma.
Erika Waugh
South Adams – 2011
Finished second in a pair of races Saturday as the Calvin College women’s swim team fell 166-130 to Wheaton.
Waugh was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 1.49 seconds, and 200 backstroke in 2:12.09. She was also third in the 200 individual medley, and joined Margaret Rechel, Lexi Scott and Michaela Rookus for a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
The junior was also fifth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 freestyle in a three-team meet Friday against Wayne State and Olivet Nazarene.
Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Led the Huntington University women’s basketball team in scoring and assists Saturday in a 77-61 loss to Campbellsville.
Speed finished with 15 points and six assists for the Foresters (1-2). She hit a pair of 3-pointers, went 5-of-6 at the foul line and added three steals.
Dylan Cope
Jay County – 2013
Posted a top-20 finish Saturday for the Indiana University East men’s cross country team at the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Midway.
Cope placed 18th out of 71 runners in the 8K race as the Red Wolves finished as conference runners-up. He had a time of 29 minutes, 10.7 seconds.
Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Made the most of her time on the floor Saturday in the Bethel College women’s basketball team’s 79-75 loss to Dakota Wesleyan.
Hunt made half of her eight 3-point attempts and finished with 14 points in 18 minutes. She also had three rebounds and two assists.
The junior notched three points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals Friday in a 67-53 win over Viterbo.
Mason Evers
Fort Recovery – 2013
Saw the first action of his collegiate career Saturday in the Ohio Northern University football team’s 52-10 victory over Wilmington.
Evers carried the ball three times for 10 yards. The victory improved the Polar Bears to 5-4.
Hannah Moore
South Adams – 2012
Led a group of former Starfires at the Crossroads League Championships hosted by Goshen as she competed for the Huntington University women’s cross country team Saturday.
Moore finished 28th in the 5K race with a time of 20 minutes, 4 seconds. The Foresters were third in the team competition.
Alli Beitler
South Adams – 2010
Turned in the No. 3 time for host Goshen College women’s cross country team at the Crossroads League Championships.
Beitler posted a time of 20 minutes, 34.4 seconds, in the 5K race for the seventh-place Maple Leafs. She finished 32nd overall.
Tim Lehman
South Adams – 2012
Ran for the Goshen College men’s cross country team at the Crossroads League Championships.
Lehman finished the 8K race in 28 minutes, 39.4 seconds. Goshen placed third out of eight teams with 71 points.
Dustin Wanner
South Adams – 2012
Helped lead the defense for the Taylor University football team as it battled NAIA No. 8 St. Francis in a 20-12 defeat.
Wanner finished with four tackles for the Trojans, who slipped to 4-5. Taylor trailed just 14-12 before USF scored a touchdown with 2:24 left in the game.

Played for the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team Tuesday in its 61-56 loss to Shawnee State.
