Commission OKs document destruction (09/11/07)
Jay County Records Commission
The Jay County Records Commission approved the destruction of old public records on Monday.
The commission, which is required to meet at least once a year, agreed to allow disposal of records from the town of Redkey, Jay County Public Library, Jay School Corporation and the offices of the county clerk, auditor, treasurer and assessor.
Jay County Clerk Jane Ann Runyon said copies of the documents, which include pay records, attendance information from the high school and other forms have been destroyed.
Some of the papers were on different "retention schedules," which mandate how long each category of records must be kept.
All the records must be copied and sent to the State Commission on Public Records.
Also Monday, the commission approved the destruction of library card applications from the Dunkirk Library dating back to the 1970s.
Commission members also voted to re-approve retention schedules that have been approved by the state.
The commission periodically approves retention schedules at the request of the state, Runyon said.
Members of the Jay County Records Commission include Runyon, Jay County Auditor Freda Corwin, Jay County Recorder Betty St. Myers, Portland Clerk-Treasurer Linda Kennedy, Commissioner Milo Miller Jr. and Jay County High School secretary Jane Carlin (not present).[[In-content Ad]]
