Community garden to return
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
As the last snowdrift (we hope) finally melts in Jay County, what could be more exciting than contemplating the arrival of green grass, the emergence of spring flowers and the budding of trees that will soon be blooming. Following that will come the tilling of the good earth and the planting of all sorts of seeds and plants. And, if you are looking for a place to try your hand at such an activity this spring, we are pleased to report plans are in the works for the Community Garden behind the hospital to be open for business once again.
In 2013, thanks to the burying of a new sewer line beneath the Community Garden, there was no garden. The garden will be re-established this spring, thanks to the willingness of Jay County Hospital to again make space available behind the hospital and the assistance of Mayor Randy Geesaman and his team.
Because it is a mission of the hospital to improve the health of Jay County, to encourage wellness in general and a healthy diet in particular, there will be an added Community Garden feature starting in 2014. Thanks to the support of the Purdue Extension Office and the recently formed Master Gardeners Organization, it is hoped that educational opportunities including information about gardening in general, plants, weeds, insects, harvesting, etc. will be provided. It is further hoped that information imparted and experience gained will encourage those who have space near home to continue to garden there in the future.
There will be an ad in The Commercial Review that includes a preliminary gardening participant sign-up form. This ad containing the sign-up for will run during the week of April 7. If you are interested in gardening at the Community Garden in 2014, please fill out the form and send it to the Administrative Office, Jay County Hospital, 500 W. Votaw Street, Portland, IN 47371. You may also stop by the hospital to fill out a form.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
