Community made visitors welcome
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Jay County community for its gracious hosting of the students from Anshan Angang Senior High School in Anshan, China.
As a member of the China Initiative group that traveled to Anshan in April, I experienced the warmth and hospitality of our Chinese hosts at our sister school.
Two weeks ago, we had the opportunity to repay that kindness as a delegation of two teachers and seven students from Anshan High School were visiting.
Many administrators, teachers, students and community members spent much of their time working to create a memorable experience for our visitors.
One such example was our walking tour of downtown Portland on Tuesday, June 15, and our cookout later that evening.
I would like to thank the following individuals for their kindness on that afternoon: Jack Ronald, for opening up the newsroom of The Commercial Review to our visitors and explaining the function and services provided by the paper; Kay Locker and staff of the Jay County Historical Society for showing the student around the museum and explaining the history of Jay County; Leslie Newton for a tour of Arts Place and viewing of her art exhibit "Taos"; Rob Weaver for his explanation of the services provided by John Jay Center for Learning; Roger McBride for our tour of the courthouse; Sharlette Cole and Steve Zielinski for their preparation of refreshments at Sharlette's Fudgery and the Glass Bonsai; Vicki Tague for welcoming the visitors at the Jay County Chamber of Commerce; Steve and Jenny Schwieterman for opening their home to the students for a large cookout, hayride and bonfire.
Each of these individuals provided our guests with a taste of what Jay County has to offer, but more importantly they displayed the kind hospitality that Hoosiers and Jay County residents are known for.
Thank you again.
