Community Thanksgiving dinner set (11/8/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

Are you ready for another day of thanks and feasting with your family and friends? The day is fast approaching and we will soon be serving a hearty dinner to hundreds of individuals with our 14th Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Asbury United Methodist Church.

Around our tables there will be families facing the holiday alone as loved ones are too far away to attend their traditional meal; others without a job and out of money; some facing medical problems and unable to prepare the time-honored meal for their families; and entire families anxious to celebrate the holiday with their friends.

We are excited to welcome back Buttnz and Bowz, who bring smiles that reach deep into the soul with their delightful balloon characters and antics. And this year’s door prizes will continue to give pleasure to all the lucky winners as there will be many gift certificates to local groceries, restaurants and pharmacies. It is hoped this assistance will give the home budget some relief and provide enjoyment even after the holidays are over.

As before, we will feel rewarded to see the homebound included in this festive holiday as they are furnished with double portions of food to carry them through a long weekend. If you are homebound, we have many drivers standing by who are anxious to deliver this traditional meal to your home. Please call either the Asbury U.M. Church at (260) 726-8464 or the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church at (260) 726-8832 (mornings) with your request. If you choose to brighten the day of homebound individuals by joining them for dinner, feel free to stop by Asbury for the number of carryout meals you will need.

If you have your own holiday tradition with your family but would like to lend a hand, please feel free to make an extra dish (in a disposable container, please) and drop it off at Asbury as you travel to your gathering.

Or if you want to spend an hour or two assisting as needed, we invite you to stop by at your convenience. Help is always needed in homebound preparation (9 to 11 a.m.), homebound delivery (11 a.m. to noon), serving the dinner and drinks in the Fellowship Hall (at 1 p.m.) and the dreaded clean-up (3:30 to 5 p.m.).

The welcome mat is out, the table is set and we want to encourage all of you to join us for this heart-warming day. But, whatever your plans, we wish you all the good things that are part of November, filled with peace and all the joys that you’ll always remember.
