Compromise reached on grad garb (04/28/08)
A new tradition will be launched at this year's commencement for Jay County High School's graduating seniors.
JCHS principal Jeremy Gulley said this morning those members of the class who have enlisted in the military and completed basic training will be brought to the stage in their uniforms to lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
They will then don their caps and gowns and re-join their classmates to take part in commencement exercises.
The wearing of military uniforms at commencement has been the topic of several letters to The Commercial Review over the past few weeks.
Gulley, who in addition to being JCHS principal is also the area commander for Indiana Nation Guard troops, said wearing the traditional commencement cap and gown over the military uniform is appropriate for the occasion.
He has also consulted with the area Marine recruiter and said he has no problem with it.
Superintendent Tim Long met with local members of the American Legion last week to hear their concerns and discuss the matter.[[In-content Ad]]
