Concerned with school safety

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

We are all under the assumption that when we send our children on the busy in the morning that they are now under the care and supervision of the Jay School faculty and staff and that our children are safe. Well I am here to tell you that is not always the case.

Our daughter is in middle school and has to ride the bus to the high school to get on her bus to go home. One day earlier this month, she said that after she got off the bus she was attacked from behind. The girl came up and started pulling her hair and punching her in the back. She took her to the ground and hit her a few more times.

This all happened near the buses and drivers, but none of them apparently saw what happened. School officials said there are supposed to be two faculty members supervising the buses.

Our daughter got suspended for two days, as did the girl that attacked her, because our daughter fought back. Since when is self-defense punishable? This whole situation is not acceptable. If these were adults, the attacker would be sitting in jail right now. You don't attack someone from behind. That's just being a coward. It is natural instinct to try and fight back. We do not condone fighting, but we also don't want our children to just sit there and not do anything.

According to Mr. (Lee) Newman, the principal at East Jay, our daughter was just supposed to walk away. How many parents out there would just want your child to get beat up and just sit there and take it? I'm guessing not many.

We just want to know, where is the supervision? What if this girl had a gun or knife? It could have been a lot worse than it was. We are not saying our daughter is completely innocent. She said the same girl tried beating her up last week, but our daughter said she told school officials and the issue has not been resolved.

What is wrong with our school system? There are much-needed changes in the supervision and the safety and well being of our children. They only have cameras on one side of the high school. Why in the world aren't there cameras on both sides?

We need to ensure the safety of our children. We are so close to pulling our daughter out of Jay County Schools. She is being treated unfairly and no one is willing to take the blame. All we have gotten the last couple of days are nothing but lame excuses.

I guess it's going to take someone getting someone seriously hurt before they actually start doing something. We would like to thank the father of the other girl involved. He did call and apologize for what his daughter had done. At least he was man enough to realize that she was in the wrong. That's more than I can say for the faculty.

Come on, Jay School Corporation, do your part, make our children as safe as you can and quit passing the buck.

Parents, please feel free to response to this. Maybe if we all band together something can be done and we can get this problem solved.

Dave and Beth Freyburgher
