Confrontation is the better option

Editorial

It was a sight that — fortunately — you don’t see every day.
But — unfortunately — similar things do happen all the time.
On a sunny afternoon, the window of a car parked beside the courthouse rolled down. A hand came out of the window, then dropped a piece of litter on the sidewalk.
It was the brazenness that was striking.
Daylight, witnesses, a public place, and still someone was willing to dump trash out the window.
What in the world are these people thinking? Or are they thinking at all?

Anyone who has taken a stroll down a rural road in Jay County knows how bad the littering problem is. But it’s not much better in town.
Sometimes, it seems that convenience store patrons believe the world is their wastebasket when it comes to those annoying, ubiquitous Styrofoam cups found all over the place.
So what are the rest of us to do?
Here’s a suggestion: Call people out for their bad behavior when you witness it. Let your disapproval be known.
As to that car parked beside the courthouse, all it took was a knock on the window and handing the trash back inside to make the point.
A little confrontational? Maybe. But if the only other option is living with litter, we’ll take confrontation now and then. —J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
