Contract OK'd for sewer work (08/24/07)
Portland Board of Works
By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-
Extension of city sewer service to Portland Municipal Airport is expected to begin in about two weeks.
Members of the Portland Board of Works awarded a contract this morning for the extension work.
Under the contract, work is expected to begin in less than two weeks.
Board members voted this morning to award the contract to Watson Excavating, Redkey, which had the lowest bid at $93,930. Eleven other companies submitted bids with the highest being $169,600.
The company was selected based on a recommendation by Gene Amlin, the engineer hired by the city for the project. Amlin said he spoke with Jay County Highway Department officials and others about Watson Excavating.
"I recommend you accept" the Watson bid, he said.
"There's no reason not to accept the low bid," said Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland.
The board decided to stipulate that work begin within 10 days of Watson receiving the contract. The company likely will get the contract on Monday, Amlin said. This deadline should give the company ample time to order manholes and other materials needed for the project, he said.
The project could take up to 120 days to complete, but Amlin said he expects work to be completed within two months.
The gravity sewer line currently ends along county road 100 North, about one-eighth of a mile west of U.S. 27.
The line will be extended west 2,800 feet along the south side of county road 100 North.
Also this morning, the board approved a supplement to an agreement with Community and Family Services Inc. to grant a temporary right of way to the city for the Boundary Pike/Wayne street project.
"The (supplement) spells out and finalizes all our access to the property," Hosier said.
The temporary right of way is located on the west and south sides of the 521 S. Wayne St. property near the railroad tracks.
Hosier said bid letting for the Boundary Pike/Wayne Street project - which will include extensive sewer, storm drain, sidewalk and streetscape work - is expected to held in October.[[In-content Ad]]
