Contract OK'd for stimulus paving

Jay County Commissioners

With two federal stimulus-funded repaving projects in the county awarded to a contractor, the Jay County Commissioners signed a contract with an Indianapolis-based project supervisor.

Jay County engineer Dan Watson applied for four projects in April and reported earlier this month that two of them - county road 200 South between Blaine and Boundary pikes and 400 South between Ind. 1 and Dunkirk - were bid during the month.

"Those have both been awarded," Watson said, informing the commissioners that Brooks Construction won both projects.

Watson presented the commissioners with a contract for Beam, Longest and Neff to act as project supervisor for the two projects, with a clause to continue that work if the other two pending projects are awarded.

Watson said he wasn't sure if the repaving would be completed before winter.

"I don't know how quick they'll get it paved," he said. "I would almost bet that they won't (until next year)."

Watson is hoping two other projects - county road 300 North between U.S. 27 and Pennville, and 1150 West from Dunkirk south to the Jay-Randolph county line - will be picked up during the October bid-letting.

In other business this morning, the commissioners:

•Signed a contract with Atlas Building Services to complete stonework repairs around the courthouse at a cost of $27,009. The commissioners also approved an emergency claim for a 15 percent down payment to Atlas.

•Received a report from LifeStream Inc. about "211" telephone information usage. Between Jan. 1 and Jun. 30, Jay County residents made 148 calls.

LifeStream handled 8,021 "211" calls from Blackford, Delaware, Grant, Henry, Jay, Madison and Randolph counties during the period.

The 211 service by LifeStream provides area residents with social and community services.

•Received a report on usage of the National Association of Counties prescription drug card program. During August, 639 county residents used their cards to fill 1,578 prescriptions for a total savings of $17,088.85.

That was a savings of 26.74 percent.[[In-content Ad]]
