County continues work on policies (07/22/2008)

Jay County Commissioners

By By STEVE GARBACZ-

Jay County officials met again Monday afternoon to review the county's personnel policy.

In their second meeting since May, the working group consisting of commissioner's president Milo Miller Jr., county council members Gerald Kirby and Marilyn Coleman and personnel consultant Kent Irwin, from Waggoner, Irwin, Scheele & Associates, continued to review the county's policy, scanning over vacation and leave time in about an hour-long meeting.

The group discussed holidays, medical leaves, and military leaves among others to set a finely defined set of rules for county employees.

The group discussed some aspects of the Family Medical Leave Act to make sure any employee departures for recurring medical conditions would be handled correctly.

In other personnel related business, Coleman asked Irwin if Jay/Portland Building Planning director Bill Milligan has resubmitted the job description in an attempt to change title and increase pay for his current administrative assistant. Irwin informed her that he has received a second try on the description.

Irwin reviewed the first submission from Milligan and determined that no additional pay was warranted from the job description and the county council followed his suggestion and took no action.

Milligan said he doesn't have experience in writing job descriptions and was looking for help in the second rewrite. With no suggestions from the council on who to turn to, Milligan rewrote it himself and is hoping the second chance effort will be enough.

The county council will likely receive Irwin's opinion on the new draft in time for August's meeting.[[In-content Ad]]
