County crews rack up OT for clean-up (12/19/05)

Jay County Commissioners

By By MARY ANN LEWIS-

The heavy snows in the area the past few weeks have forced workers at the Jay County Highway Department to put in about 565 hours of overtime.

Highway superintendent Ken Wellman told Jay County Commissioners this morning that in addition to the department’s 18 employees, two employees of the surveyor’s office worked 16 hours and two salaried employees worked 65 hours clearing snow.

“I’m really proud of the way the employees handled the situation,” Wellman said.

“People don’t realize how physically and mentally demanding it is to push snow continually.”

Because of the additional hours, the department incurred $18,352.78 in overtime pay, Wellman told commissioners Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer, and Faron Parr.

He also said the department used 69 tons of salt and 140 tons of ice grits (small gravel) in an attempt to treat the road conditions.

Additional money was also spent for diesel fuel for the department’s plow trucks, which get approximately 3.3 miles per gallon.

An additional $3,988.90 was spent to purchase diesel fuel for the clean-up

Also this morning the commissioners heard Ralph Frazee, director of Jay County Emergency Management, say that a second transmitter frequency has been authorized by the state’s Region 14 Public Safety Communications Plan.

“This is so everybody can talk back and forth,” Frazee said of the county’s various departments, and will provide better communication in a possible emergency situation.

The county’s two frequencies — 867.1625 and 868.0625 — will now be transmitted from a tower at the Indiana State Police post in Redkey.

Frazee said the county’s tower located south of town is in need of too much repair to make it cost effective to use.

Commissioners also still continued to discuss the relocation of polling sites in Jay County.

Clerk Jane Ann Runyon presented another option to commissioners today that could see four precincts voting at the Jay Community Center.

Citing the Jay County Fairground’s lack of paved parking, Runyon said, “We’ve gotta move out of the 4-H building.”

Runyon’s proposal would have voters in Noble Township, Wayne 5, Wayne 2 and Wayne 4 voting at the community center.

The sites at Pike Township and Greene Township are still questionable, she said, since the sites must be brought up to federal Americans With Disabilities act standards by March.

Commissioners approved Runyon’s recommendations.[[In-content Ad]]
