County official quits (11/09/06)
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
Jay County Treasurer Maria LeMaster has resigned from the office after only a month on the job and just four days before the deadline for paying the fall installment of personal property taxes.
LeMaster, who was elected by the Republican Central Committee to the post to succeed former treasurer Frances "Fran" Milthaler, took office on Oct. 7. Her resignation was effective at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
Milthaler died Sept. 10 as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in southern Indiana and LeMaster was chosen by the Republican Central Committee to fill the spot.
Citing personal reasons, LeMaster noted in a letter addressed to Jay County Commissioners, treasurer's office staff and Republican officials that "problems have arisen that I was not aware of when I sought the job. I assure you that these personal issues will fix themselves and I will be alright (sic) over time. I just ask for some privacy in dealing with them now."
She could not be reached for comment today.
"I hate it's going on right now," Jay County Clerk Jane Ann Runyon said Wednesday afternoon concerning the resignation.
Carla Horn, Jay County Republican party chairman, said today she was notified of the resignation Wednesday afternoon in a written statement from Runyon.
Horn now has 10 days from the date of LeMaster's resignation to notify precinct committeemen. A caucus must then be scheduled within the next 30 days.
"I hope she (Horn) moves pretty quickly," Runyon said of scheduling a caucus, and Horn said she would be moving the process along quickly.
Anyone interested in seeking the position must declare their intention at least 72 hours prior to the caucus, Runyon explained. Forms are available in her office which serve as an application for the position.
Horn explained there are no degree qualifications for the position, but training is offered following once that person is office. Applicants must be registered Jay County voters.
As Monday's property tax deadline nears, Robin Alberson, a former Jay County Treasurer who now works in the auditor's office, will be helping with tax collection responsibilities in the treasurer's office.[[In-content Ad]]
