County officials to get update (05/22/07)
Jay County Commissioners
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
County officials will get an update on changes in the way local governments can fund operations at a joint meeting next month.
Jay County Commissioners and Jay County Council will meet Monday, June 11 at 4 p.m. to hear a presentation from Gretchen Gutman, a Indianapolis attorney on how Indiana House Bill 1478 could impact funding of local government.
Local attorney John Coldren told commissioners Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer, and Faron Parr on Monday afternoon that Gutman, who has worked with the Department of Local Government Finance, has put together a PowerPoint presentation about the impact the bill will have on change.
Coldren, who has worked for years with the Indiana Senate,
Council members and commissioners will meet June 11, at 4 p.m. in the commissioners' room at the courthouse to hear that presentation.
In an effort to bring more money into the counties for operations, the bill would give officials options other than property taxes - including collecting an income tax.
Additionally Monday afternoon, commissioners heard Jay County Sheriff Ray Newton say that an additional appropriation of $15,000 he had received for maintenance work at the jail has been used and he will be asking county council for more money in June.
After using all of a budgeted $15,000 for maintenance, Newton sought additional maintenance money earlier this year.
Newton told commissioners that repairs to the cell doors at the facility have been costly, while other repairs are needed.
Newton said commissioners will see results from a walk-through conducted in May, about how to better use the facility and plans for a possible expansion. That presentation is set for June 18, at 1:30 p.m. during the commissioners' regular meeting.
Also Monday, commissioners appointed rural Portland resident Patrick Miller to serve on the Jay County Hospital's Board of Trustees. He replaces Dr. David Fullenkamp, who resigned from the board following his first four-year term.
Commissioners also learned that a CBC Shredmaster for use by courthouse employees and ordered in February has not been delivered, even though the $2,090 cost for the equipment was paid in March.
Commissioners reprimanded courthouse superintendent Roger McBride for paying for the equipment before it was received.
McBride said he had contacted the company and learned that parts of the shredder were on back-order. He said he was told to expect a June 8 shipping date.
"They have to June 20 to get it to us," said Miller. "If they don't, tell them we want our check back."[[In-content Ad]]
