County OK's buy of local copier
Jay County Commissioners
Jay County Commissioners decided to shop local when considering options to buy a new copier for the Jay County Sheriff’s Office.
911 director Bill Baldwin presented the commissioners with two quotes for a new copier for the administrative area of the sheriff’s office, one from Progressive Office Products for $1,499 and another from Office Concepts, Fort Wayne, for $3,132.
Although the copier from Office Concepts cost more than double, the quote included an annual maintenance agreement.
“How many copies do you run a month, Bill?” asked commissioner Jim Zimmerman.
Baldwin said the office currently runs about 8,000 to 9,000 pages per month but most of that paperwork is for the jail, which will have its own copier in the new setup at the sheriff’s department. Baldwin estimated that this administration area copier will probably be printing about 2,000 to 3,000 pages per month.
But with a lesser print load expected and with Progressive being in town for maintenance if needed, Zimmerman suggested the county go with the lower quote.
“I’d rather stay with local people, local business … especially when you’re talking half the price,” he said.
Zimmerman and commissioners Milo Miller Jr. approved the purchase and made Baldwin purchasing agent to buy the copier. Commissioner Faron Parr abstained since he owns Progressive.
In other business this morning, the commissioners:
•Were informed by Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz that a wailing noise emanating from the jail may be the result of a vibration caused by a new high-efficiency furnace.
Badders said a fan that is part of the furnace system may be the cause of the noise and that the problem is being looked into. Several people who live near the jail have complained about the noise.
•Approved purchase of point-to-point radio equipment at a cost of $5,712.90. Baldwin said the new radios will allow easier direct communications between departments. The $5,712.90 figure is half of the total cost; Portland Police Department will pay the same amount for the shared purchase.
•Reappointed Dr. Jerry Whetzel and Sue Hilfiker to the Jay County Board of Health.[[In-content Ad]]
