County seeks review of jail hood citation

Jay County Commissioners

The county will file for an administrative review with the state after the fire inspector cited the Jay County Sheriff Department for a noncompliant fire exhaust hood.

The department was written up for the exhaust hood in the kitchen, because the inspector was unable to perform a hydrostatic test on the hood to check if it would activate in a fire.

Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz Architecture said the exhaust tank on the hood is in good shape and is functional, but since the hood is an older model, it can't be tested like newer models. The hood will be replaced with a newer model when the jail expansion is complete.

Badders said even though the current equipment is functional, since it can't be tested, the inspector had to cite it. He told the commissioners there were four options to address the problem.

The county could replace the hood, which would cost about $2,000, ask for an administrative review, file for a variance at a cost of $275 plus fees for engineers to attend the hearing, or write a letter acknowledging the problem and just wait until the expansion is completed and the problem resolves itself.

The commissioners told Badders they'd like to file for the administrative review by sending a formal letter to the state, explaining that the hood will be replaced when the expansion is completed.

Attorney Bill Hinkle told Badders to draft a letter and that he will review, sign and send it to the state.

In other business Monday, the commissioners:

•Were informed by insurance agent John Gause, Apex Benefits, that the county's health insurance premium under its current plan will increase by 18.16 percent.

After reviewing some alternatives, the commissioners voted to change to a plan that will increase 11.21 percent over the county's current premium.

•Were informed by community developer Ami Huffman that advertising in the newspaper and on the radio for 2010 census awareness will cost about $6,000. The commissioners suggested she meet with town boards and service organizations to come up with the funding.

•Informed county assessor Terry LeMaster that employees staying overnight at a motel for Level II assessor training should make reservations and will be reimbursed by the county at a later time.

•Were informed by Jay Emergency Medical Services supervisor Teresa Foster-Geesaman that the ambulance chassis purchased earlier should be ready by December.

Were also informed by Foster-Geesaman that the Dunkirk City Council approved funding half of the cost for a generator for the combined Dunkirk Fire/JEMS station. The commissioners told her to purchase the generator for $7,153 and the county will pay its half.

•Approved a new line item for Jay Superior Court for computer maintenance for the audio recording system.

•Approved roof replacement and guttering to the county retirement home with Goodhew Roofing at a cost of $52,800. The commissioners will ask the county council for infrastructure funds for the project.[[In-content Ad]]
