County tax sale planned (10/01/07)
Jay County Commissioners
By By TRAVIS MINNEAR-
Interested people will soon be able to purchase a piece of Jay County at a property tax sale.
Six real estate parcels will be auctioned at 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 at the Jay County Courthouse.
The sale will help move some properties that have remained on the market for several years, Auditor Freda Corwin said. Properties will not be sold for less than the appraised value if assessments are more than $2,000.
Properties with appraised values of less than $2,000, will be sold for the assessed value, appraisal costs, title search costs, recording fees and advertising costs, according to information provided by the auditor's office. New owners will be issued a commissioners deed after purchase.
"We have some properties that have been on sale for 12 years," Corwin said.
Separately, Sheriff Ray Newton said architecture and engineering firm, DLZ, will not meet with commissioners on Oct. 8 to discuss a potential county jail expansion and renovation because Commissioner Milo Miller Jr. will not be present. Instead, he said, the firm will come in on Oct. 15 and discuss details of the project.
Commissioners also heard testimony from Vernon Adair today about what he called poor conditions at a cemetery located on county road 300 North in Wabash Township.
Adair said Stevens Cemetery was not being maintained adequately. He added that he would lend his services to ensure landscaping and other upkeep is routinely completed.
"The people taking care of it are doing one poor job," Adair said.
Commissioners said they would send a letter to Wabash Township trustee Eileen Miller to address the issue.
Also today, Assessor Anita Mills visited with commissioners, informing them of the status of the county's tax reassessment on commercial and industrial properties. She said her office is working closely with the state to ensure all procedures outlined by the state are being followed.
She also said representatives from the vendor in charge of reassessments, Ad Valorem Solutions, Kokomo, will meet this week with Indiana Department of Local Government Finance to review the reassessment process.
In other business, commissioners made the following appointments:
•Pat Gibson to the Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals to replace Donna Chittum.
•Rex Pinkerton to the Jay County Cemetery Commission, starting at the beginning of 2008. He will replace his father, Paul Pinkerton, who is serving the remainder of the year.
