Couple gives thanks to helpers

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
A word of thanks to our friends and neighbors in our time of needing help.
On Feb. 7 about 6 or 7 a.m., my husband woke me telling me he needed help. He had to go to the hospital because the pain was unbearable.
Not having a phone, I flagged down a truck going by and asked her to call 911. She did and in 15 to 20 minutes the ambulance came, checked his vitals, put him in and took him to the hospital, where they gave him pain medicine.
He has pneumonia and a kidney infection. They gave him a prescription and released him to come home. We were snowed in. We have no family living, so everyone was concerned with my being left alone. They called our township trustee.
In the meantime, Joe called our neighbors to help. They did graciously and with speed. In an hour, Gregg and Bessie Hummel were at our home. They picked me up and then we picked Joe up, stopping at Wal-Mart to fill the prescriptions and a few necessities, got us home, brought in the purchases, put Joe to bed, gave him his medicine and then those lovely people left.
While we were resting, Gregg came and cleared our walk and driveway. What a blessing to have help and compassion in this crisis. We are in our 80s and really I needed to be with someone. You see I cannot drive due to nerve damage in my right leg, knee and foot. There is no feeling. It’s just numb.
We are O.K. now and I know these kind and generous people will give me help if I need it.
Thank you to those of you who were involved in giving help to us:
•The truck driver who called EMS

•The ambulance and crew
•Sheriff’s department and crew
•Township trustee
•Hospital and staff
But most of all the kindness and compassion of them all — especially Gregg and Bessie Hummel.
Bless them all. They are angles and they all will be in our prayers every day.
God Bless and keep them all safe in Christ’s name and image.
Thank you.
Joe and Louise Toth
