Couple ready to return to Portland (08/14/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Well, time is almost here for another Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Show. It does not seem possible that another year has gone by. We have been coming to Portland for 16 years. We have made many friends around Portland. We always look forward to our time there and appreciate all of you coming by to welcome us back.

We have always been treated like family and love the feeling of community support for the school, Jay County Band, and the engine show itself. We also dearly love all the yard sales and the feeling of friendship the people meet us with.

My husband was sick one year with kidney stones and we received excellent treatment from the local hospital.

We produce pecans in Georgia and have sold them at the old Frenchy's Market. We loved Frenchy and Evelyn and miss them. We have lost other friends, also. That is the only low point of our visit, to hear of other friends we have lost during the year.

As we near retirement we realize just how much good friends and fellowship mean, like our good friends around Portland.

Ya'll have a wonderful community and we love the small-town American feeling. If we were ever looking to relocate, we would certainly choose Portland.

This is a thank you not to the entire community and our many friends there. And as usual, when we get to the edge of town, my husband will pick up the radio and say, "feels like coming home, don't it?" It really does.

Come by to see us. We're looking for you, and we'll share some southern hospitality.

Thank you,

Vernon and Sara Copeland

BMV Suggestion

To the Editor:

Concerning the BMV being closed again.

Here's a thought how about moving the BMV back to Dunkirk. The building looks to be available and when we had the BMV here it was open when it was to be open, little to no waiting, the help knew their job, and it was in Jay County.

At least we didn't have to go out of county to do our business. I say move it back here permanently and give Dunkirk a chance.

Fair thanks

To the editor:

Well, another Jay County Fair has come and gone.

A big thank you should be given to our many generous merchants for door prizes, displays, booths, etc. And what would the fair be without the countless hours worked by the many volunteers of our community?

Without their help there would be no sausages, tenderloins, hamburgers and other delicious things to eat. In addition, many buildings and displays would go unmanned.

Here at the Women's Building, we would like to thank the countless pop tab counters. There were 1,149 adult and 363 children's tabs.

A special thank you goes out to the people who took time to put on the programs.

They were enjoyed by all.
