CR rule upsets local family

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

In reference to telephone calls to and from The Commercial review with my mother and myself in regards to my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary open house announcement:

On April 12, my mother placed the announcement with The Commercial Review. On April 14 she received a phone call from The Commercial Review informing her they would not list her deceased daughter, Eileen Bickel, as a family member due to their policy. At that time mother requested to talk to a supervisor and a lady by the name of Barb came on the line and very sarcastically reiterated that it was indeed their policy not to list deceased relatives.

This has greatly upset our parents, because she (Eileen) is still their daughter, deceased or alive. All she wanted was deceased behind her daughter and son-in-laws’ names and listed with the rest of their children.

On April 15, I (Rita) called the paper and asked to speak to Jack Ronald and he said he would not change his mind due to company policy which has been in effect for 30 years.

I proceeded to ask him if there were any changes at the paper office in the last 30 years such as articles, pay, benefits, etc. He said yes, of course. But they would not change this policy because they don’t want to list deceased aunts, uncles, grandchildren, etc. I told him that a daughter or a son is much closer than any of those.

I asked him if I could pay to have those four words (Jeff, Eileen Bickel-deceased) added. He firmly said no, we can not, due to policy; it would take up too much space. I commented, if they were alive you would have found the space. So what is the difference, just because she doesn’t live here on earth anymore?

My parents did put the announcement in the Mercer County paper, The Daily Standard, and they didn’t have any problem at all with listing our sister and her husband as deceased.

Jack suggested I write a rebuttal to the newspaper. I asked what good would that do? He said he would reply with his answer.

O.K., Jack, your readers of this so-called family paper are waiting for your reply.
