Criminals won't obey new laws
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
This is in response to the letter to the editor from Thomas D. Rose in Thursday’s edition of The Commercial Review. First, let me say that nobody in their right mind wants another horrific slaying of innocent children and action should be taken to prevent such an atrocity.
Regrettably, there isn’t some magic bill our federal government could propose and pass that will prevent another Newtown. The Manchin-Toomey Bill wouldn’t have prevented it. The proposal was intended to do away with so-called gun show and Internet gun purchasing loopholes.
Sounds good, but it’s misleading. If you purchase a gun on the Internet, it can only be shipped to a Federal Firearm License (FFL) holder. An example would be your local gun shop. The purchaser then goes to the gun shop, where a form 4473 is filled out and a background check is performed. Only when the purchaser passes the background check can they take possession of the firearm. It’s the same deal at gun shows if you’re buying from a gun dealer.
The so-called loophole our government is actually referring to is a private sale between individuals. The only way their proposal would even work is if every gun was accounted for and entered into a national registry. This is where it gets very unappealing to most gun owners.
Three points:
1. It wouldn’t have prevented Newtown.
2. It’s another bill that infringes on the 2nd Amendment and punishes law-abiding citizens.
3. Registration=Confiscation.
By the way, where is hunting mentioned in the 2nd Amendement? Very few people own “automatic” weapons. Those who do have special permits which they have to obtain through the ATF plus pay a $200 tax on each weapon.
Truth is, I don’t know what action must be taken to prevent another Newtown, movie theater shooting, slashing at a Texas college or a bombing at the Boston Marathon. It’s quite apparent there are evil people in this world and if they want to invoke harm they will use whatever means they have at their disposal. I don’t believe making new laws is the answer. Criminals, terrorists and evil-minded people don’t follow laws.
