Cross country coach says thanks (11/07/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

There are several things that contributed to the great success of the Jay County High School girls cross country team this season.

The support and encouragement the ladies received lead me to thank the following people:

1. Phil Ford and Joni Penrod in the athletic department.

2. Faculty, staff and fans at JCHS for their support and words of encouragement.

3. The parents of the great young ladies who supported their student-athletes in many ways. They provided support at home and at meets, served many meals, snacks and drinks, transportation to and from practice, great momentos and encouragement.

4. Ray Cooney for his great articles and support.

5. Coach Selvey.

6. The young ladies who on a daily basis just took care of business. They were a joy to coach. Thanks to the seniors for their great leadership - especially to Jess Mosier, our team leader, who filled a vital role this year and also as one the coach could go to for advice. To Allison Fullenkamp who had a great comeback season and provided a freshman great guidance. Tina Gingrasso, a really tough nut who really came on for the team in the second half of the season. Jenna Valentine, who also came on in the second half of the season and provided great moral support. Amanda Johnson, who was a leader on the practice field and in the races and our MVP. Paige Klinger, a great young lady who struggled with injuries, but gave all that she could. Kylie (Smiley) Wellman, who quietly did her thing and ran great for us all year.

Cassie Laux, who did a great job, especially in the first two-thirds of the season and continued to encourage her teammates. Brittany Burris, who like Cassie also did a great job for the team in the first two-thirds of the season. Brittany and Cassie were eventually bumped from the first seven, but still continued to work and encourage their teammates. Kristen Selvey, who struggled some with injuries but was there every day and did a great job in some of our reserve races. Last, but not least, Kari Hemmelgarn (Cheery), a young lady with no previous cross country experience who did a great job for us.

All four of the young ladies who were not on the first seven (varsity) stayed and practiced with the team from the end of the regular season through the semi-state.

7. My wife who was very supportive and a good source of counsel.

8. Travis Towell and Josh Hawn for the tail-gating parties, and especially to Travis for hauling his grill to the regional and semi-state.

9. I would be remiss if I did not thank awesome God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who is the one who made it all possible.
