D key in Fort victory
FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY - The Indians failed to score for the final 3:24 of their season opener.
However, such a stretch was not uncommon in Friday night's game. And it did not prevent the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team from picking up a victory.
Ryan Schoen's 3-pointer with 3:25 left in the game gave FRHS enough of a lead to hang on in a defensive struggle as it defeated the Memorial Roughriders 32-29.
Dan Bubp of the visiting squad from St. Mary's responded to Schoen's triple with one of his own with 2:47 to play. But the Roughriders managed just two more field-goal attempts the rest of the way and failed to connect on both. Those misses allowed the Tribe to hang on, despite missing the front end of 1-and-1 free-throw attempts twice in the last 50 seconds.
Both teams struggled from the field, with Fort Recovery shooting 17 percent in the first half and 27 percent (11-of-41) for the game. Greg Kahlig led the way to the victory with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Schoen added six points, and Cody Fiely and Craig Tobe each scored four. Fiely grabbed six rebounds.
Bubp had 11 points for Memorial, which went just 4-of-20 (20 percent) in the second half and finished at 26 percent for the game. Paul Pfenning had six points and six rebounds, and Derek Roop had nine boards.
The key stretch for the Indians came in the third quarter, starting when Kahlig got a steal and dunk to pull them within two points. A Kahlig jumper followed by a hoop from Fiely made it a 6-0 FRHS run, and that was enough.
The Roughriders pulled even twice, but the home team never fell behind again. The Tribe took the lead for good on a pair of Kahlig free throws with 6:14 to play.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery turned the ball over 18 times and fell 27-24 to the Roughriders.
Both squads hit for just 19 percent from the field, but Memorial benefited from extra possessions thanks to committing seven fewer turnovers.
Jared Kahlig had six points, five rebounds and two assists for the Indians. Trent Kaiser had five points and six steals, and Aaron Wilker grabbed nine rebounds.
Tre Sherman led the Roughriders to victory with six points and nine rebounds. D.J. Manning also scored six points.[[In-content Ad]]
