Dedication set for Freedom Park (9/13/05)
Ceremony set for Oct. 1
Freedom Park, a project launched by The Portland Foundation to honor local veterans, will be formally dedicated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Keynote speaker for the dedication ceremony will be Rep. Mike Pence (R-6th District).
The park, developed at 229 S. Meridian St. in Portland, is on ground donated to the foundation by the late Ann Goodrich as a potential site for John Jay Center for Learning. When JJCL’s plans shifted to the Weiler Building, the foundation initiated the idea of Freedom Park.
Featuring a memorial plaza with hundreds of bricks bearing the names of citizens who served in the U.S. armed forces in war and peace, the park also has a reflecting pool and water feature, benches, flagpoles, and landscaping.
A cluster of flagpoles is situated on the Meridian Street side.
