Defense leads Fort Recovery girls again (12/23/05)

ARCANUM, Ohio — Stifling defense powered the Indians again.
For the second time in four games the Fort Recovery girls basketball team held a team to 25 points or fewer, crushing the Arcanum Trojans 47-25 Thursday. It also defeated Ansonia 78-12 on Dec. 10.
The Indians (5-1) doubled up on Arcanum in each of the first two quarters, leading 16-8 after the first and 26-13 at halftime. The Trojans never challenged in the second half as they shot just 18 percent after the intermission and 21 percent for the game.
Vicki Roessner scored in double figures for the second straight game, finishing 6-of-10 from the field en route to a 16-point night. She was also one of four players with three steals.
Sara Fortkamp added 10 points and eight rebounds. Tiff Gaerke notched eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, and Holly Stein scored eight points.
Jackie Eib had 11 points and five rebounds for Arcanum. Ashley Falknor had nine points and six rebounds.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery came up big in the fourth quarter for a 39-32 victory over the Trojans.
The game was tied after three periods, but the Indians scored 16 fourth-quarter points to take the victory. They had scored just five points in each of the previous two periods.
Anne Koesters finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for Fort Recovery, and Jill Pottkotter had eight points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Kelsey Wuebker added eight points and four steals.
Abby Ashworth had nine points to lead Arcanum, and Emily Schellhaas added eight.
Middle school girls
FORT RECOVERY — The eighth grade team held the Versailles Tigers scoreless in the first half for a 21-14 victory. The seventh grade team limited them to one point in the fourth quarter as it picked up a 24-21 win.
Emily May scored eight points to lead the Indian eighth graders, who were up 12-0 at the half. Josie Guggenbiller and Erika Muhlenkamp each scored four points.
The seventh grade Tribe was tied with Versailles at 16 at halftime and 20 after three quarters before edging them 4-1 in the fourth quarter of the defensive battle. Michelle Brockman finished with eight points, and Kendra Brunswick scored six.
Middle school boys
FORT RECOVERY — Cody Fiely’s 3-pointer in overtime lifted Fort Recovery’s eighth graders to a 45-43 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers. The Tribe seventh graders slipped back to .500 at 2-2 with a 37-28 loss.
The Indians (3-1) trailed 43-41 in the eighth grade game before Fiely drilled a 3-pointer to give his team the lead. Greg Kahlig added a free throw with six seconds remaining for the final margin.
Kahlig finished with 14 points, Josh Wendel scored 10, Nate Wendel had nine and Fiely finished with eight.
Craig Kaiser had eight points to lead the seventh grade squad. Ryan Schoen scored six points.[[In-content Ad]]
