Despite Faller, Tribe falls short vs. LCC (09/20/03)
FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY — A huge individual effort from a junior running back and a solid three and a half quarters of football wasn’t enough to make it a happy homecoming for the Fort Recovery Indians.
The Indians, led by a 200-yard rushing game from junior Greg Faller, gave up a 46-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes to play as they were beaten 14-7 at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park.
The visiting Thunderbirds, who had jumped on top with a score midway through the second quarter, won it on a 46-yard pass to Nick Page from quarterback Jeremy Krieg with just 2:17 to play.
Fort Recovery, which drops to 1-4 on the year, actually got two touchdowns from Faller in the first half — but the first of those two scores was called back on a penalty.
The second score for the 5-7, 200-pound back was the highlight of a career game for Faller.
Facing third down and 10-plus yards for a first down, Faller turned a simple hand-off up the middle into a personal highlight film, breaking two or three tackles in the first 10 yards, then shaking free from Lima Central Catholic’s safety, spinning, and outracing two defenders to the end zone with just 1:32 left in the first half.
But the Indians couldn’t turn that momentum into points in the second half, and the late scoring strike to Page from Krieg was the difference.
Lima Central Catholic was out-gained 277-242 by the host Indians, but committed zero turnovers to Fort Recovery’s two.
Faller, who broke loose on three runs of 30-plus yards, accounted for 200 of Fort’s 277 net yards on 19 carries.
FRHS quarterback Mark Willman completed 3-of-8 passes Friday for 36 yards. He was picked off once.
Fort Recovery will be back on its home field Friday as it takes on Delphos St. Johns at 7:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
