Developers withdrawing request

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

As the signs that say, “Stop R10 spot zoning” are popping up everywhere I am reminded of my campaign to run for Mayor of Portland. I placed hundreds of signs all over Portland trying to get my name out. Just as the residents around Boundary Pike and Floral Avenue are trying to get their message out.

For those of you who do not know what these signs mean, let me fill you in. My brother, Jeremy, and I are trying to develop three condo style duplex across from Heather Park Apartments at Boundary Pike and Floral Avenue. But, in order for this project to materialize the zoning must be changed from R8 to R10; simply meaning where only single family homes were allowed now two-family homes (duplexes) could be built.

In presenting our plans to the planning commission on May 6, many concerns from neighboring opponents were raised and discussed. To the opposition’s disappointment the project and re-zoning request was approved 5-3. This would lead to a final vote needed by the city council.

A week or so had passed and the council meeting was held. Myself and the opposition once again presented our sides to the council. Bill Milligan, director of building and planning, was asked by the council members if all measurements and requirements had been met. His response was “yes.” So the council decided 6-1 to send it back to building and planning for one final analysis before approval.

As young entrepreneurs my brother and I are becoming very discouraged in the growing number of neighboring opposition. “This is one man’s dream and a neighborhood’s nightmare,” was a comment made by the spokesman of the opposition at the council meeting. Well, the project isn’t exactly a dream, but it is our goal to create and develop cleaner, nicer neighborhoods by replacing new housing in place of old, run-down housing or on vacant lots. But, it also is in our best interest to create good neighbors and friends.

My brother and I and many of the opponents of this project have lived in this community all or most of our lives and we do not wish to create a bad situation for you, anyone, or any neighborhood. Instead, we will be presenting plans for new single-family homes.

We apologize for the inconvenience we have created for the neighbors around this property. We would also like to thank Bill Milligan for all his time and support for the project. Also, the planning commission members for their votes in favor of the project.

Sincerely,

Jason and Jeremy Bullard

Portland
