Display charity this season
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Forty years ago the “compassion network” began. In 1971, while pasturing the Redkey Free Methodist Church, I would drive to Muncie every Monday to the bread surplus store and purchase 10 loaves of bread for $1, plus some cinnamon rolls and other second day goodies. Returning home, I would distribute this food to poor families.
As time goes by, the people that stand out to me as special were the “givers.” My Sunday school teachers, my “B” league baseball coach, my grandma who allowed me to add chocolate syrup to my vanilla ice cream. I can even remember the customers on my paper route that gave me tips and who blessed me at Christmas time.
In John 3:16, God gave his only begotten son. The word “give,” in all its forms, is listed more than 2,000 times in the Bible.
Are you blessed?
Has the Lord blessed you with wealth and prosperity?
Jesus spoke to the Pharises in Matthew 23, telling them they “should give tithes (a 10th).”
In Luke 6:28, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
When is the last time you gave away something you actually needed?
Try giving instead of being a tightwad.
2 Corinthians 9:9: “He hath dispersed abroad, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness remaineth forever.”
There are several charities available to you to bless and churches to give your increase. Remember this. “Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both ministers bread for your food, and multiply your seed down, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.” (2 Cor. 9:10).
You’ll receive many opportunities to give this holiday season.
Help as many as possible.
If you can, please consider the “Compassion Network,” celebrating 40 years of giving. One hundred percent of your donations help the poor and needy in Jay County.
The address is 122 E. Race St., Portland, IN, 47371
Sincerely,
Rev. Phill Jellison
